Success Stories: From Core60 to Licensed Builder

In the competitive world of construction, a builder’s license can be the key to unlocking growth and credibility. For Zjanice Carter, owner of Carter Contracting, Room 35’s Core60 program provided the foundation to turn her aspirations into achievements. This is her journey from dreamer to licensed builder.

Before Core60: A Vision for Community Impact

Zjanice’s motivation to pursue a builder’s license was deeply rooted in her passion for the trades and a desire to empower her Black and Brown community to generate real wealth. However, challenges in business planning, goal setting, and scalability made it difficult to achieve her goals.

She discovered Core60 at a networking event hosted by the NACD, where Room 35’s founders presented the program. Zjanice knew immediately it offered everything she needed to take her business to the next level.

The Core60 Experience: Building Skills and Confidence

From the start, Zjanice felt honored to join Core60, appreciating its intentional and structured intake process. The weekly evening classes allowed her to balance coursework with her responsibilities as a full-time mom, student, business owner, and employee.

For Zjanice, the most valuable module was construction math. “It translates to every trade,” she shared. “It taught me more about drywall, roofing, and carpentry, which were foreign to me before.” By completing the required 60 hours of coursework, she gained not only the technical knowledge to pass the state licensing exam but also a network of contractors who provided accountability and support.

Support Systems That Matter

The resources and instructors at Core60 proved invaluable. Zjanice connected with subcontractors and even met her bookkeeper through the program. Room 35’s partnerships with organizations like the City of Kalamazoo, PNC Bank, and Community Homeworks further enriched her experience. “I still work with all of those organizations and call up individual contacts for advice,” she said.

One standout moment was solidifying her branding with Hemlock Media, which helped her build a website aligned with her business goals.

Overcoming Challenges: The Path to Licensing

Passing the state licensing exam wasn’t easy. Zjanice took the exam four times, improving with each attempt thanks to study groups and resources provided by Core60. She relied on flashcards, detailed notes, and collaborative sessions with peers to address weaknesses.

Finally passing the exam felt like earning a four-year degree. “It gave me credibility behind my dreams and plans,” she explained. “It’s a reminder to others like me that the work pays off and is worth every minute invested.”

After Core60: Turning Dreams into Reality

Since becoming a licensed builder, Zjanice’s career has flourished. She’s secured more work, expanded her business, and given back to her community. Highlights include a bid award for a KNHS property and plans to start her first new construction home while venturing into real estate flipping in Battle Creek.

Additionally, Zjanice’s leadership potential has been recognized, leading to an offer for a position with KCDC, a group that connects contractors with opportunities.

Advice for Aspiring Builders

For anyone considering Core60, Zjanice’s advice is clear: “Do it. Find your people, ask all the questions, and focus your mind on big things.” Balancing commitments requires a strong network, routines, and mentorship—something she found invaluable during her journey.

Redefining Success

Today, Zjanice views success as more than financial gain. “Core60 taught me to chase purpose rather than paper because everything else will fall into place,” she said.

Would she recommend Core60? Absolutely. “It’s a great gauge of where you are, how to grow, and the network is unbeatable,” she concluded.

For Zjanice Carter, Core60 wasn’t just a program; it was a launching pad to a brighter future. Her story is a testament to the transformative power of education, support, and perseverance in the construction industry.
